Accessory Power and Desk Surface Power

My options got options

Desk surface power comes in a wide variety of shapes and from these days.  Typically, we are referring to ways to integrate power outlets and charging ports into the surface of a desk or workstation for easy access. Modern workspaces frequently need to have the capability to charge or power multiple devices like laptops, phones, tablets, and monitors. Wireless charging, multiple outlets, USB – A , B and C, different color options besides good old black or white and from just  as many different suppliers.

Here are some common surface power solutions for workstations:

  1. Pop-up Power Modules
  • Features: These power modules are built into the desk surface and remain flush when not in use. When you need them, they “pop up” with the press of a button.
  • Power Ports: Typically include AC outlets and USB charging ports.
  • Advantages: They keep the workspace clean and uncluttered while providing easy access to power when needed.
  1. In-Desk Power Grommets
  • Features: These are circular or rectangular units that are installed into a cut-out hole in the desk.
  • Power Ports: Can include standard outlets, USB ports, HDMI, or even Ethernet ports.
  • Advantages: Always available on the desk surface but more discrete than pop-up options.
  1. Clamp-on Power Strips
  • Features: These strips are attached to the side or back of the desk with a clamp.
  • Power Ports: They generally include AC outlets and sometimes USB ports.
  • Advantages: No need to modify the desk by cutting holes. Easily detachable.
  1. Under-Desk Power Solutions
  • Features: Power strips mounted under the desk or on a desk frame, providing power without cluttering the desk surface.
  • Power Ports: Multiple AC outlets and sometimes USB ports.
  • Advantages: Keeps power accessible but hidden, maintaining a clean desktop.
  1. Wireless Charging Pads
  • Features: Installed or placed on the desk surface to wirelessly charge compatible devices.
  • Advantages: No need for cables for charging phones and other wireless-enabled devices.
  1. Integrated Desk Systems
  • Features: Some desks come with integrated power systems as part of the design. These desks include embedded power outlets, USB ports, and even wireless charging zones directly built into the desk surface.
  • Advantages: Fully integrated and designed for modern office setups with a seamless look.

More on Wireless Charging

There are two main standards: Qi and PMA. The two standards operate very similarly, but they use different transmission frequencies and connection protocols. Because of this, devices compatible with one standard are not necessarily compatible with the other standard.

Inductive Charging

Inefficient and may lead to the degradation of your phone battery because of the heat generated.

Wired is much more efficient
